IPU condemns threats to parliamentary democracy

The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) expressed serious concerns about the scale and type of alleged human rights violations of parliamentarians in Cambodia, the Maldives, Turkey and Venezuela with the effect of jeopardizing parliamentary democracy in these countries.
 

138th IPU CONVENES IN GENEVA

The Rt Hon Justice Patrick Matibini, SC, FCIArb, MP, Speaker of the National Assembly of Zambia has led a delegation to the 138th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly and Related Meetings. The Assembly which is being held under the theme “Strengthening the global regime for migrants and refugees: the need for evidence based policy solutions” is being held in Geneva, Switzerland from 24th to 28th March, 2018.

The Mid Year Meeting of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Executive Committee was held at Hilton Resort and Spa Hotel, Flic en Flac, Mauritius from 20th to 25th of March 2018.

This is the Executive Committee Meeting of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) that exists and works in tandem with the entire CPA in order to develop, promote and support Commonwealth Parliamentarians and parliamentary staff to identify benchmarks of good governance and to implement the enduring values of the Commonwealth.

On International Women’s Day, the Inter-Parliamentary Union proudly joins the worldwide efforts to achieve gender equality. As IPU President, I call upon male and female parliamentarians and men and women of all ages to join the fight for a better society marked by justice, equality and parity.

The First Deputy Speaker, Ms Catherine Namugala was interviewed by Miss Abigail Ngalase, six year old in Grade three at Divine Heritage School on Palm Drive in Chelstone, Lusaka.This was to commemorate International Children's Day of Broadcasting (ICDB) which falls on Sunday 4th March 2018. Veteran Broadcaster Ms Ireen Kabeke Banda of Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) Radio Two (2) accompanied the "young journalist!" After the interview the First Deputy Speaker asked Abigail if she would like to be a Member of Parliament and why!

PARLIAMENTARIANS TAKE ACTION ON CHILD, EARLY AND FORCED MARRIAGE

The First Deputy Speaker, Hon Catherine Namugala, MP, has implored Members of Parliament to take keen interest in child, early and forced marriage issues as the law makers have a special mandate to protect children and women as well as influence relevant national institutions to place issues related to the rights of these vulnerable groups at the top of the government’s political and development agenda.
