AFRICAN PARLIAMENTARIANS UNANIMOUSLY ADOPT MODEL LAWS ON DISABILITY AND POLICING

African Parliamentarians adopted the Draft Model Law on Disability and Draft Model Policing Law during the Pan African Parliament (PAP) Third Ordinary Session of the Fifth Parliament that took place from 2nd to 18th October, 2019 in Midrand South Africa.
The Model Law on Disability aims at providing a legal and institutional framework for the protection and promotion of the rights of persons with disabilities, in line with the existing international and regional legal and policy instruments.

KATUTA TO HEAD THE IPU HEALTH ADVISORY GROUP

Chiengi Member of Parliament Ms Given Katuta was on Tuesday, 15th October 2019 elected to head the Inter Parliamentary Union IPU Advisory Group on Health at the ongoing 141st IPU Assembly in Belgrade, Serbia.
Ms Katuta, MP, who is Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) was elected from amongst other Group members after beating her opponent Honourable Bayr from the Austrian Parliament.  She takes over from Honourable Millet from the National Assembly of Bangladesh to serve a four-year term as President of the Advisory Group until June 2023.

The President of the Republic of Uganda and Vice-Patron of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), His Excellency Yoweri K. Museveni has urged Commonwealth Parliamentarians to uphold democratic principles and the values of the Commonwealth as he opened the 64 th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (64th CPC) for over 500 delegates in Kampala, Uganda. The President of Uganda spoke of the Commonwealth having great potential through its common language and opportunities for cooperation on trade, culture and governance.

50TH COMMONWEALTH PARLIAMENTARY ASSOCIATION AFRICA REGIONAL CONFERENCE HELD IN ZANZIBAR, TANZANIA, 30TH AUGUST TO 5TH SEPTEMBER, 2019

Speaker of the National Assembly of Zambia, Rt Hon Mr Justice Dr Patrick Matibini, SC, BA, FCIArb, MP joined other Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Speakers and Heads of Delegation in attending the 50th CPA Africa Region Conference held in picturesque Zanzibar, Tanzania from 30th August to 5th September, 2019. The Conference which was held under the theme: “E-Parliament: Seamless Platform for Facilitating Democracy” was officially opened by H.E Dr Ali Mohammed Shein, President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council.

''Respond to changing society" - Hamukale challenges Parliamentary Staff

Southern Province Minister Honourable Edify Hamukale, MP has called on Parliamentary staff to come up with a continuous reform agenda aimed at repositioning the institution to pro-actively respond to the changing needs of society.

DR JONAS CHANDA CONDUCTS A SENSITIZATION PROGRAMME IN MUSHILI WARD

The Member of Parliament for Bwanamkubwa Constituency, Dr Jonas Chanda on 24th August, 2019 conducted a sensitisation programme in Mushili ward which aimed at providing information to the constituents on the role of a Member of Parliament and Constituency Office.  Dr Chanda with the help of drama groups and Constituency Office staff also articulated in general, the opportunities available for the constituents to participate in the work of the National Assembly and in particular how they can access the Constituency Office.
