IPU condemns attacks on MPs in Cambodia and Myanmar

The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has condemned physical attacks on MPs in Cambodia and Myanmar this week, which have left three politicians in hospital.
 
IPU is calling for authorities in both countries to ensure greater protection of parliamentarians and freedom of assembly and expression as a cornerstone of democratic practice.
 

Fiji re-joins Global Parliamentary Community

The readmission of Fiji into the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has been welcomed by the Organization as a significant step forward in ongoing efforts to cement democracy in the country and in IPU’s engagement with parliaments from Pacific Ocean Island nations.
 
The formal readmission at the opening session of IPU’s 133rd Assembly in Geneva today increases the Organization’s membership to 167 national parliaments.

Protection of refugees must be stepped up in wake of unprecedented crisis

Countries hosting refugees must comply with the principles of international refugee and humanitarian laws to ensure their protection in the wake of the worst refugee crisis since the Second World War, a global conference of national parliaments has declared in Geneva.
 
Nearly 800 parliamentarians from 135 countries have reiterated the need for States to save refugees lives and provide them with the necessary care in an emergency resolution adopted at the 133rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) today.
 

Concerns grow over imprisoned Iraqi and other MPs across World

The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is deeply concerned over the fate of two former Iraqi MPs, one of whom is facing the death sentence and allegedly in solitary confinement without access to medical treatment.
 
It is urging Iraqi authorities to lift the death sentence against Ahmed Jamil Salman Al-Alwani, a prominent critic of former Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki and the persecution of Sunni Muslims. IPU is also calling for the immediate release of Mohammed Al-Dainy who remains in prison despite being acquitted of a series of trumped up charges.
 

World’s MPs commit to action on digital freedom and fairer migration

Parliamentarians from 137 countries have committed to action aimed at tackling two of the most challenging issues facing the world today – migration and the protection of digital freedoms - as they concluded a global parliamentary conference in Geneva.
 
Adopting a resolution on democracy in the digital era at the 133rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the MPs have set new standards on protecting democracy and digital freedoms in an age of mass surveillance.
