Speaker of the National Assembly  of Zambia, the Rt. Hon Justice Dr Patrick Matibini, SC, MP on Sunday 29th March, 2015 addressed Delegates at  the National Convention Centre where  the 132 Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly is taking place  in Hanoi, Vietnam  from 28 March to 1st April, 2015, under the theme, “The Sustainable Development Goals: Turning Words into Action.”

The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) will be carrying out human rights missions to the Maldives, Malaysia and Mongolia in the coming months in a series of decisions adopted on the closing day of its 132nd Assembly in Hanoi.  The Organization is deeply concerned by the serious and repeated death threats allegedly made against opposition MPs in the Maldives since last year, as well as the increasing political polarization and heightened tensions in the country since the arrest, trial and conviction of former President Mohamed Nasheed earlier this year.

Zambia to host 134th IPU Assembly in 2016

The Speaker of the National Assembly of Zambia, Rt. Hon, Justice Dr. Patrick Matibini, SC, MP, has officially announced that Zambia will host the 134th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly on 18th to 23rd March, 2016.

He made this announcement during a press briefing at the Media Center, Parliament Building in Lusaka today.

The Speaker said the event will be an opportunity to show the world what Zambia has to offer in terms of tourism and also products manufactured in Zambia.

Zambia Pledges Support to Mozambique Candidate for the Pan-African Parliament Presidency

The Rt. Hon. Justice, Dr. Patrick Matibini SC, MP, Speaker of the National Assembly of Zambia has pledged to support Hon. Eduardo Joaquim Mulembwe of Mozambique for the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) Presidency.

Speaking during a meeting held at Parliament Buildings, on 20th April 2015, the Hon. Speaker of the National Assembly of Zambia assured Hon. Mulembwe of the support of the National Assembly of Zambia and offered his personal commitment towards his candidature.

“There is need for close collaboration between the Office of the Speaker and the Whips of the House”, says the Speaker of the National Assembly, Rt. Hon. Justice Patrick Matibini, SC, MP.
He stated that the interface between the Office of the Speaker and the House was through the Whips, who ensure party discipline, thereby being pillars when the House is  facing challenges in  maintaining order in the House.

Malaysian Senate urged to take opportunity to improve basic freedoms - The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is calling on the Malaysian Senate to take the opportunity to improve political freedoms in the country when a bill already adopted by the lower house of parliament to amend a controversial Sedition Act comes before it in the next few days.

 

 
The Sedition Act is aimed in part at regulating speech which could incite unrest or religious tension.
