Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan Visits The Speaker Of The National Assembly

Former Nigerian President, His Excellency Mr Good luck Jonathan and his Delegation visited the Hon Speaker of the National Assembly at Parliament Buildings on Tuesday 9th August, 2016. The former president is in the country as Leader of the Delegation for the Africa Union (AU) Election Observer Mission ahead of tomorrow’s general elections that will be held on 11th August, 2016. Speaking during the visit, the Rt Hon Justice Dr Patrick Matibini SC, MP, Speaker of the National Assembly, gave an  overview of the Zambian Parliament from its inception to date. He also explained  the reforms of the Zambian Parliament such as introduction of parliament radio, inception of Constituency Offices and construction of the new committee buildings with the help of  Cooperating Partners. He also discussed the different Constitutional Review Commissions that were appointed from the first one led by the late  former Vice President Mr Mainza Chona (1970-1973) to the most recent which was conducted by a Technical Committee Chaired by Hon. Justice Annel Silungwe, SC, former Chief Justice.

The Hon Speaker thanked the AU Election Observers for coming to Zambia and Parliament Buildings in particular as this showed how much democracy is being practiced on the continent  and being consolidated in Zambia.

The Nigerian former President thanked and commended the Hon Speaker and also the country at large for holding free and fair elections in the past. He also commended the National Assembly of Zambia for taking charge of running  Constituency Offices unlike the way it is done in Nigeria where the Constituency Office is run by the winning Member of Parliament. He expressed happiness concerning how Zambia's efforts in trying to promote free and fair elections and allowing Election Observers to come into the country  way before elections.

He spoke about the need for gender equality to be enhanced and youth’s participation in the electoral process, so that more women and youth are voted as Members of Parliament. The AU Observer Delegation will be in the country until 15th August, 2016.
