SPEAKER OF ZAMBIA HOPES TO CREATE A ‘NERVE CENTRE’ OF CONSTITUENCY OFFICES TO BOOST PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT WITH NATIONAL ASSEMBLY

In an interview on Parliamentary Conversations in the Commonwealth, a podcast by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), Rt. Hon. Nelly Mutti, Speaker of the National Assembly of Zambia, outlined her priorities for building the capacity of the National Assembly to carry out its core democratic functions. 

 

Parliamentary Caucus on Children commits to supporting the Child Code Bill

The Parliamentary Caucus on Children (PCC) has strongly committed to supporting the Child Code Bill once it is tabled before the National Assembly for enactment into law. Mr Joseph Munsanje, Member of Parliament for Mbabala Constituency and Chairperson of the PCC, giving his remarks on behalf of the Caucus during an engagement meeting between the PCC, Save the Children and Children Activists held at Taj Pamodzi Hotel in Lusaka on Thursday, 9th June, 2022, informed the meeting that the PCC will vigorously lobby all MPs to ensure that the bill garners the required threshold to pass into law.

STRENGTHEN THE IMPLEMENTATION MECHANISMS ON RESOLUTIONS, MUTTI

Speaker of the National Assembly of Zambia, The Rt. Hon. Nelly Butete Kashumba Mutti, MP, has urged Parliaments to strengthen the implementation mechanisms on resolutions made at the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Africa Region Annual General Meeting. She emphasized that there is need to actualize the implementation mechanisms in the respective Parliaments.

FIRST DEPUTY SPEAKER, CHISANGANO LEADS COMMITTEE ON PRIVILEGES AND ABSENCES ON A BENCHMARKING VISIT TO THE PARLIAMENT OF UGANDA

The First Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Zambia, Hon. Malungo Chisangano, MP has led the Committee on Privileges and Absences on a benchmarking visit to the Parliament of Uganda. The Committee assists the Speaker to determine matters relating to the privileges and discipline of Members of Parliament. The purpose of the visit is to exchange best practices on the privileges of the House (National Assembly) and breach thereof, and on the discipline of Members of Parliament.

SPEAKER MUTTI DATES THE PARLIAMENT OF GHANA ON A BENCHMARKING VISIT

Speaker of the National Assembly of Zambia, The Rt Honourable Nelly B K Mutti, MP has led the Standing Orders Committee on a benchmarking tour to the Parliament of Ghana to share best practices on the welfare of Members of Parliament and staff.  

The Standing Orders Committee will be in Ghana until 30th May, 2022.

THE COMMITTEE ON PARLIAMENTARY REFORMS EMBARKS ON A TOUR OF THE COPPERBELT

The Hon Second Deputy Speaker, Honourable Moses Moyo,MP is currently leading the Committee on Parliamentary Reforms,  which he Chairs at the National Assembly of Zambia, to tour Constituency Offices on the Copperbelt Province of Zambia. The tour started on Tuesday 19th April 2022 and will continue until Friday 22nd April, 2022 and is aimed at familiarizing the Committee on Parliamentary Reforms with operations of Constituency Offices.

ZAMBIA IN TOP 5 DELEGATIONS WITH MORE WOMEN PARTICIPANTS AT 144TH IPU ASSEMBLY

The National Assembly of Zambia has been ranked amongst the top 5 delegations with 50.1 to 60 per cent women parliamentarians who participated in the just ended 144th Assembly of the Inter – Parliamentary Union (IPU). This was according to a statement which was released by the IPU Secretariat at the close of the 144th IPU Assembly held in Nusa Dua, Bali in Indonesia from 20 to 24th March 2022.
