PAN AFRICAN PARLIAMENT STATUTORY COMMITTEES HOLD THEIR AUGUST, 2018 MEETINGS

The Pan African Parliament Statutory Committees held their meetings from 4th to 11th August, 2018 in Midrand, South Africa and Cairo, Egypt.
The Committee on Agriculture and Rural Economy held their meeting in Cairo, Egypt while the rest of the committees met in Midrand, South Africa.
The meetings covered legislative business as dictated by the mandate of the Pan African Parliament and under the African Union 2018 Theme of “Winning the Fight against Corruption: A Sustainable Path to Africa’s Transformation”
The Pan African Parliament is made up of eleven (11) Statutory Committees whose membership is made up representatives from each region of the African Continent. The Committees handle business that is ordinarily handled by the corresponding Specialised Technical Committees responsible to the Executive Council of the African Union.
The Zambian Parliament was represented in the following committees of the Pan African Parliament:
i.    Committee on Finance and Monetary Affairs-Professor Geoffrey Lungwangwa, MP (Delegation Leader).
ii.    Committee on Agriculture and Rural Economy-Hon Mutinta C Mazoka and Hon. Margaret Miti, MP.
iii.    Committee on Trade, Customs and Migration-Hon Anthony C Mumba, MP.
iv.    Committee on Health, Labour and Social Affairs-Hon Maxas B Ng’onga, MP.
During the just ended session, the Pan African Parliament Committees considered the 2019 Work Plans and the draft 2018 to 2023 Strategic Plan.
Other notable items of discussion included the development of a Model Law on Disability in Africa; Labour Migration Governance on the African Continent; Illicit Financial Flows-The Global Tax Agenda; and Amnesty International’s presentation on Human Rights Situation in Africa.
Resolutions and recommendations of the Committee Meetings will be adopted by the Pan African Parliament Plenary in October, 2018.
