MEDIA, CENTRAL TO FLOW OF INFORMATION FROM PARLIAMENTS TO CITIZENS - KAWIMBE

The National Assembly of Zambia with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) hosted a training workshop aimed at improving media coverage and parliamentary reporting from 8th to 9th July, 2023, at Parliament Buildings.

Speaking during the official opening of the workshop, the Acting Deputy Clerk Corporate Affairs, Mr. Stephen Kawimbe emphasized the importance of accurate and truthful reporting on parliamentary issues.

He stated that the media plays a central role in the flow of information from parliaments to citizens adding that the workshop was purposeful in enhancing journalists' comprehension of the National Assembly and its work.

He further stated that the National Assembly hoped that by providing relevant information, journalists would be better equipped to present parliamentary issues in a manner easily understandable by the public.

Mr. Kawimbe urged the participants to apply the knowledge gained during the workshop and to position themselves as media experts proficient in reporting on parliamentary proceedings. And the Acting Principal Clerk, Public and International Relations, Mr. Anthony Mpolokoso stated that the Parliamentary Reporting Training workshop was a demonstration of the National Assembly's commitment to transparency, effective communication, and fostering a mutually beneficial relationship with the media. He said that as journalists enhanced their understanding and knowledge, the public could expect more comprehensive and accessible reporting on Parliamentary matters, thereby, ensuring that citizens are well informed and that Zambia has a stronger democracy.

The workshop was attended by journalists from twenty (20) media houses including those that are public, private and online based. Topics covered in the workshop included; Parliamentary Procedure, the Legislative Process, the Budget Process and the National Assembly Committee system among others.
