The National Assembly of Zambia Resumes Sitting

The Fourth Session of the Eleventh National Assembly, which adjourned sittings on Thursday 26th March 2015, resumes sittings today, Tuesday 16th June 2015 for the End of Year Meeting which runs between the months of June and July. This End of Year Meeting is expected to discuss a number of issues during its course.

IPU urges action on eighth anniversary of Lebanese MP’s murder

IPU has renewed its call to the Lebanese authorities to make every effort to bring the killers of Lebanese MP Walid Eido to justice, on the eighth anniversary of his murder.

Walid Eido was killed in a car bomb attack in Beirut on 13 June 2007.  He was one of a number of high-profile figures targeted in a wave of attacks following the killing of former Prime Minister Rafic Hariri in 2005. Three other MPs - Gibran Tueni, Pierre Gemayel and Antoine Ghanem were also murdered. None of the killers has been caught.

Young MPs call for radical responses to counter youth alienation and disengagement.

A major international conference of the world’s young MPs in Tokyo has called for radical policies to end the alienation and radicalization of young people, including new education policies and employment quotas. View full Story.

I have been informed by the Zambia Institute of Advanced Legal Education (ZIALE) that out of three hundred and twenty three (323) candidates that sat for the Legal Practitioners Qualifying Examinations in December 2014/January 2015, only a total of seventy-five (75) have passed.

IPU welcomes steps to reduce tensions in the Maldives

IPU welcomes the recent initiative by President Abdulla Yameen calling for dialogue between the Government and political parties in the Maldives. Ongoing political tensions in the country have been a serious concern for IPU.
 

Parley sensitises and ‘rocks’ Kasama residents.

The National Assembly of Zambia conducted a sensitization Road Show in Lukashya Constituency in Kasama on Saturday, 16th May 2015.  Speaking at the Road Show, Team Leader and Deputy Chief Librarian, Mrs Muswa Suuya, said the National Assembly has embarked on a campaign to enlighten Constituents on the roles and functions of the National Assembly with emphasis on the role of Members of Parliament and Constituency Offices.
 

Commonwealth Day celebrated under 'A Young Commonwealth.

The Commonwealth Day celebrations held on 9th March 2015 were celebrated at the Parliament Buildings with an Open Forum which allowed young people to discuss the establishment of a Youth Parliament in Zambia. The Speaker of the National Assembly, the Rt. Hon. Justice Dr Patrick Matibini, SC, MP officially opened the ceremony and in his remarks told the youth that he was delighted that young people from all over the country came together with the view of creating a forum through which the youths could meaningfully contribute towards fostering democracy and development.
 

Mr Speaker launches the 1.5 Kilometre long ‘Journey in History’ painting

The Rt. Hon. Justice Dr. Patrick Matibini, SC, MP, Speaker of the National Assembly of Zambia has urged Zambians to listen to and respect the diverse voices and viewpoints of various people in the communities including those of the children. He was speaking during the launch of the 1.5 Kilometre long painting themed the ‘Journey in History’ at the Parliament Buildings.

Commonwealth observers to redeploy to Nigeria for 28 March elections

20 March 2015 - Commonwealth election observers are set to redeploy to Nigeria ahead of Presidential and National Assembly Elections, to be held on 28 March 2015. The Commonwealth Observer Group is led by Dr Bakili Muluzi, former President of Malawi.

Speaker of the National Assembly  of Zambia, the Rt. Hon Justice Dr Patrick Matibini, SC, MP on Sunday 29th March, 2015 addressed Delegates at  the National Convention Centre where  the 132 Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly is taking place  in Hanoi, Vietnam  from 28 March to 1st April, 2015, under the theme, “The Sustainable Development Goals: Turning Words into Action.”
