FORUM OF PARLIAMENTS OF MEMBER STATES OF THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE GREAT LAKES REGION SG COMMENDS ZAMBIA FOR PEACEFUL ELECTIONS

The Secretary General of the Forum of Parliament of Member States of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (FP-ICGLR) Ambassador Onyango Kakoba,has commended Zambia for the peaceful Presidential and General elections held on 12th August 2021.

Speaking at Parliament Buildings on Wednesday, 10th November, 2021, Mr. Kakoba said the holding of peaceful elections was an important milestone and hailed the National Assembly of Zambia for electing the Rt Hon. Ms Nelly B K Mutti, MP as the first female Speaker of the National Assembly of Zambia. 

The Secretary General further applauded Zambia for its active participation and financial support through consistent financial contribution as a member state of the ICGLR. 

Ambassador Kakoba said the visit to Zambia was in line with the practice of the ICGLR to familiarize new leadership in Parliaments with the Forum’s roles and responsibilities in order to ensure continued interaction and cooperation. It was stated that it being a new National Assembly that is expected to select new members to represent it at the forum, gender representation in selecting Zambia’s five (5) members to FP-ICGLR is cardinal. 
Speaker of the National Assembly, Rt Hon. Ms. Nelly B K Mutti, MP thanked Ambassador Kakoba for the visit.

She stated that Zambia is striving to ensure that there is gender balance in the allocation of decision making positions so that more women can occupy leading roles in government. The Speaker further thanked the ICGLR in promoting democracy and good governance among member states.  She added that, it is encouraging that Pact on Security, Stability and Development in the Great Lakes Region has continued to foster peace and security among the member states and therefore, pledged enhanced interactions and cooperation with the FP-ICGLR.

The International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) is an inter-governmental organization of the countries in the African Great Lakes Region. Its establishment was based on the recognition that political instability and conflicts in these countries have a considerable regional dimension and thus require a concerted effort in order to promote sustainable peace and development
