MWAKALOMBE SPEAKS TREE PLANTING FOR A GREEN ENVIRONMENT

Chongwe Member of Parliament and Copperbelt Provincial Minister, Honourable Japhen Mwakalombe has called on Chongwe residents to ensure that they plant trees in order to protect the environment, human life and property.

Honourable Mwakalombe made the call during the tree planting exercise at Evergreen primary school in Kanakantapa ward in Chongwe.

The lawmaker stated that trees must be preserved because they play a critical role in human life. He said that trees are vital in providing the much needed oxygen for human life and that even agriculture depended on the availability of a green environment which should be guarded jealously. Honourable Mwakalombe added that trees have a critical role to play in protecting buildings from being destroyed by heavy rains and wind. He noted that without trees, climate change would continue to impact negatively on human survival.  He therefore, stressed the importance of tree planting as a way of preserving the environment.

In this regard, the lawmaker challenged the school authorities in the district to ensure that school children plant more trees in the schools. “Tree planting must be part of the activities in schools and involving school going children in tree planting will place a lasting impression on the young generation,” he said.

And Chongwe Forestry Officer, Ms Petronella Chipasha said that tree planting must be embraced by all if the environment was to be preserved. She observed that the cutting down of trees in the district was rampant and hence the need for residents to plant more trees.  Ms Chipasha added that it is important to inculcate the culture of tree planting in children at a tender agewhen they are still young.

The MP thanked the school authorities at Evergreen primary school for taking the call seriously.

The tree planting exercise is part of the National Assembly of Zambia Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC) plant a tree project launched by the Speaker of the National Assembly of Zambia, The Rt Hon Mr. Justice Dr. Patrick Matibini, SC., BA FCIArb, MP at Parliament Buildings on 23rd November, 2020.
