FORMER CLERK OF NAZ, CHIBESAKUNDA DIES

Former Clerk of the National Assembly of Zambia, Mr. Mwelwa Ng’ona Chibesakunda has passed away.  Mr Chibesakunda who served as Clerk from 1968 to 1990 and 1991 to 2002 died on Tuesday, 25th February, 2020 at the age of 80 years in South Africa where he was undergoing treatment.

The Late Mr. Chibesakunda who is one of the longest serving Clerks of Parliament in the Commonwealth was instrumental in the formation of the SADC Parliamentary Forum.  In 1993, whilst serving as Clerk of the National Assembly of Zambia, he was appointed consultant in drafting the SADC Parliamentary Forum’s Constitution.  He also served as the Interim Secretary-General of the SADC Parliamentary Forum from 1996 to 1999.

While serving as Clerk of the National Assembly of Zambia, Mr. Mwelwa Ng’ona Chibesakunda  chaired and presided over several meetings of Clerks of Commonwealth Parliaments and immensely contributed to the orientation of parliamentary officials and Members of Parliament.  In recognition of his distinguished service, the International Biographical Centre, Cambridge, United Kingdom honoured him with the International Man of the Year 1991/1992 Award for outstanding work in parliament practices and procedure.

He also served in other designations including the Foreign Service and will be fondly remembered as a disciplined, hard working man who was dedicated to public service.
