NATIONAL ASSEMBLY OF ZAMBIA CELEBRATES AFRICA PUBLIC SERVICE DAY

The National Assembly of Zambia has joined other Government Ministries and Institutions in the commemoration of Africa Public Service Day under the theme “Entrenching Citizen- Centered Service Delivery Culture: Partnering with the Youth for Africa’s Transformation”

Under a Parliamentary democracy, Parliament oversees Government administration and

Subject its activities to detailed scrutiny on behalf of the people.  To carry out this important function,The National Assembly of Zambia has for the first time taken part in this celebration.

 

The celebration was preceded by a three day exhibition from 20th to 22nd June 2017 at East Park Mall, Lusaka were The National Assembly of Zambia engaged and disseminated information to the public on the role of Parliament.

In addition, this participation was done in line with the National Assembly’s objective of taking Parliament closer to the people and as part of the implementation of the 2017 – 2021 National Assembly Communication strategy whose goal is to engage, interact with public and increases their participation in the work of Parliament.

Public service delivery is one of National Assembly's priorities of ensuring that the people of Zambia have more information about the happenings in Parliament and take part in decision making. Therefore, this celebration has provided a platform to reflect and share progress made by National Assembly in bringing Parliament closer to the people.

 

Furthermore, the day offered an opportunity for people to know more about Parliament and know the developments in their Constituencies.

 

Africa Public Service Day is an event enshrined in the African Union calendar. It originates from the conference of African Ministers for Public or the Civil Service which was held in Morocco in 1994.

A decision was then taken at the conference that annually on June 23 the continent should be celebrated as Africa Public Service Day to recognize the value added by the public service to the lives of the people.

This day recognizes that democracy and successful governance are built on the foundation of a competent civil service and it is held on June 23rd every year.
