FIRST DEPUTY SPEAKER GRACES INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY IN CHIRUNDU DISTRICT

Hon Malungo A Chisangano, MP, graced the commemoration of the International Women’s Day in Chirundu District on Sunday, 8th March, 2026, where she joined hundreds of women and community members in celebrating the achievements and contributions of women in society.

In her remarks, the First Deputy Speaker stated that despite progress made to achieve gender equality, women and girls in Zambia still face challenges such as gender-based violence, discrimination and limited access to justice. She, therefore, called for stiffer laws and policies to prevent and punish violence against women and girls. Hon Chisangano highlighted the need for improved institutional mechanisms to ensure existing laws are effectively implemented. Further, she emphasised the importance of empowering women and girls to fully participate in social, economic, and political activities. She noted that women play a critical role in national development and should be given equal opportunities to contribute to decision-making processes at all levels.

During the celebrations, the First Deputy Speaker urged communities to recognise and support women who are championing development and transformation in respective areas. She further encouraged young women to pursue leadership roles and take advantage of opportunities that promote education, entrepreneurship and community development.

Meanwhile, Mr Patrick Kasambila, Chirundu District Commissioner applauded the Government for putting in place progressive gender laws and policies, that promote and protect the rights of women and girls. The District Commissioner noted that these laws and policies played a key role in addressing gender inequalities, promoting women’s participation in leadership, and ensuring that women had access to opportunities in education, businesses, and community development.

At the same event, the Council Chairperson Mr Nevers Muchindu, demanded for action in dismantling the structural barriers that held women back. He commended the Government for the efforts being made to uplift the lives of women, especially through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF). He highlighted that CDF was transforming the lives of many women in the country. Mr Muchindusaid that women are able to access grants and loans under CDF to start-up businesses. He added that empowering women in such ways translated in stronger familiesand economically viable communities in Chirundu District.
