HON CHISANGANO CALLS FOR BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF GMOS AMONG MPS

First Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Zambia, Honourable Malungo Chisangano, MP, has called on Members of Parliament to deepen their understanding of Zambia’s biosafety policies and the status of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). “By fostering a deeper understanding of these regulations, Zambia can establish itself as a leader in promoting safe and responsible biotechnological advancements”. She made this appeal during a sensitization meeting on the policy and legal framework on biosafety and the status of GMOs in Zambia organised by the National Biosafety Authority (NBA) on Wednesday, 4th December 2024 at, Parliament Buildings.

Hon Chisangano said biotechnology has great potential to address challenges in agriculture, healthcare and environmental management. However, she pointed out the need to balance innovation with ethical and safety considerations.

She urged MPs to counter myths surrounding GMOs, such as fears of diseases by relying on credible expert information.

“We have all heard people saying consuming GMO foods can lead to diseases like cancer, infertility, or genetic mutations. Today we have an opportunity to get credible information from experts to establish the real truth as to whether GMO foods are harmful or not and ensure that debates on GMOs are informed and factual”.

During that same event, the NBA Board Chairperson, Mr. Webster D. Shabusale, explained the need for stronger advocacy on the use of biotechnology. He said its application in agriculture, health and industry has great potential for driving economic development.

Mr. Shabusale said innovations such as drought-resistant seeds, low-fertilizer crops and biotechnology-driven treatment for diseases like cancer would present vital opportunities to improve food security, enhance public health and promote environmental sustainability.

The sensitisation meeting held on 4th December was targeted at presiding officers, leaders of political parties in the National Assembly and clerks-at-the-table, with a similar meeting having been held for members of selected committees on 27th November, 2024.
