The Rt Hon Ms Nelly B K Mutti, SC, MP, FAPRA, Speaker of the National Assembly of Zambia, joined the Zambian community in Switzerland in celebrating the 60th Independence Anniversary of the Republic of Zambia, which was held on Saturday, 19th October, 2024, at the Zambian Ambassador’s Residence in Geneva.
In giving her reamrks, Ms Mutti,SC, MP, called upon all Zambians to emulate the sacrifices that the gallant men and women, led by the First President of the Republic of Zambia, the late Dr Kenneth David Kaunda, made in ensuring that Zambians enjoy their freedom today. The Rt Hon Speaker encouranged all Zambians to use the commemoration of six decades of freedom to uphold unity in diversity, which is the bedrock of Zambia`s strength.
In addition, Ms Mutti, SC, MP, called upon all Zambians in the diaspora to participate actively in the growth of the Country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) through investing in Government Bonds, Real Estate and other investment opportunities available.
The Rt Hon Speaker, took up the opportunity to inform the gathering that 2024 was a special year for the National Assembly of Zambia as it celebrated its 100 Years of existence as a Legislature. Speaker Mutti, said that in oredr to affirm this milestone, she has since declared 23rd May of each year as “Parliament Day.” She further, highlighted that, for the first time in the history of Parliament, approval of the National Budget will be scrutinised through Sector Committees, thus, promoting accountability and transparency in the Budget approval process.
The 60 years Diamond Jubilee Pre - Independence celebrations were organised by Her Excellency, Ms Eunice Luambia, the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Zambia to the United Nations Office in Geneva and Ambassador to Switzerland and Zambian citizens living in Switzerland. The event was held to take advantage of Hon Speaker’s delegation to the 149th IPU Assembly which was held in Genva, Switzerland. The Rt Hon Speaker was accompained by some of the Executive Committee Members of the IPU Zambia National Group that included Mr Harry Kamboni, MP, Mr Oliver Amutike, MP, Mr Nicholas Mukumbi, MP, Mr Imanga Wamunyima, MP and Ms Jacqueline Sabao, MP and staff of the National Assembly of Zambia.
The 60 years independence celebrations that coincides with the 100th birthday commemorations of Dr Kenneth David Kaunda, Zambia's founding father will be celebrated on 24th October, 2024, under the theme " 60 years strong: honouring our heritage, embracing the future."
