YOUTH PARLIAMENTARIANS ENGAGE ON CLIMATE CHANGE AND ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

Recognising the fact that young people are not only victims of climate change, but, are also powerful and valuable contributors to climate action, the Zambia Youth Parliamentary Caucus, in collaboration with Action Aid Zambia, through the Global Youth Forum, held a consultative meeting, on 29th June, 2023. In addition to parliamentarian, the consultative meeting involved youths and youth related organisation such as Youth for Parliament, Centre for Young Leaders in Africa-Zambia, Fight Inequality Alliance and Youth for Climate Justice.

The main aim of the consultative meeting was to provide a platform for young parliamentarians and the youths to discuss ways in which young people can contribute to address climate change. In this regard, parliamentarians were engaged on how they can play an active part in advocating for legislative reforms to abate and promote climate change adaptation.

Speaking during the meeting, Honourable Jean Chisenga, Member of Parliament for Mambilima Constituency and Chairperson of the Zambia Youth Parliamentary Caucus indicated that the consultative meeting was in line with the Caucus’ Strategic Plan for 2022 to 2026. In this regard, she urged her fellow parliamentarians to take a leading role in influencing, advocating and demanding for responsible behaviour as well as political will from the Executive and the private sector, with regard to addressing effects of climate change.
