Speaker of the National Assembly of Zambia the Rt Honourable Ms. Nelly B K Mutti, MP bid farewell to the outgoing Angolan Ambassador to Zambia, H.E Azevedo Xavier Francisco on Monday, 27th March, 2023 at Parliament Buildings in Lusaka.
The Honourable Speaker thanked the Ambassador for his contribution to strengthening of bilateral relations between the two countries, through the recent past pursued enhanced economic and trade relations. She hoped that these relations are replicated even at Parliamentary level.
On the occasion, Speaker Mutti showed her satisfaction with the Launch of the National Assembly of Zambia Strategic Plan for the period 2022 to 2026, as it among others envisions to collaborate with various stakeholders, including other parliaments in the region, to ensure that the Zambian Parliament learns best practices on how to effectively implement the strategies contained in the plan.
Madam Speaker further enjoined him to remain at the service of Africa’s integration and development as he moves on with his career.
And His Excellency, Ambassador. Azevedo Xavier Francisco, reiterated his commitment to continued bilateral, economic and trade relations between the two countries. In so doing, the Angolan government is expected to build 800 of the 1,300 kilometers aimed at improving the road network connection as well as facilitate easy trade between the two countries.
Ambassador Francisco also informed Madam Speaker of the return of the Angolan Airlines to Zambia which is to commence its operations soon and consider flights between Lusaka and Luanda, a project that is also part of strengthening bilateral cooperation between the countries.
His Excellency also informed Madam Speaker that Zambia is to also benefit from the importation of cheap petroleum products from Angola. He stated that the country is to be a shareholder of 15% of the Benguela refinery that is going to bring petrol and its derivative through a pipeline directly from Angola to Zambia.
The Ambassador said that, the coming into play of the oil pipeline would help to reduce the burden of importing oil using trucks which was expensive, hence it’s expected that using the pipeline from Angola would be much cheaper for the Zambian government as well as the consumer.
Ambassador Azevedo Xavier Francisco has been called back to serve in other countries after representing his country in Zambia for over three years.
