National Assembly of Zambia receives Support from China

The National Assembly of Zambia recently received office equipment from the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of China as a friendly gesture. The equipment was officially handed over to the National Assembly, by the Chinese Ambassador to Zambia H.E. Mr. Yang Youming at a special handover ceremony held at Parliament Buildings, on Monday 22nd June, 2015.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Rt. Hon. Justice Dr. Patrick Matibini, SC, MP stated that the support that the National Assembly received was a result of the courtesy call paid on him on 22nd October, 2014 by Mr. Xian Gbapingcuo, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of China. He said that it was during that courtesy call that Mr. Xian Gbapingcuo said that the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of China, would donate various office equipment which includes computers, printers, copy machines, TV sets, fax machines and telephones to the National Assembly.
The Speaker also thanked Mr. Xian Gbapingcuo and said that the donation clearly shows the close diplomatic relations that exist between the Zambian Parliament and the People’s Republic of China.

Speaking at the same event, the Chinese Ambassador to Zambia H.E. Mr. Yang Youming also equally stated that the exchanges and cooperation between the Legislatures of the republics of Zambia and China serve as an important and integral part of their solid and strong bilateral relations.
The Ambassador also said that he hopes the equipment will be of help to the National Assembly.

Zambia was the first country in Southern Africa to establish diplomatic relations with China and the two countries continue to enjoy strong bilateral ties. The two countries have maintained frequent high level exchange of visits and have experienced a surge in economic, trade, cultural and educational cooperation in recent years. Some of the benefits of the bilateral ties between Zambia and China include the trade volume between the two countries which reached close to 4 billion US dollars last year and the number of Zambian students studying in China which currently stands at 1700. There is also a project to re-invest in the operations of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway (TAZARA).
