Dr. Isabelle Uny calls for tougher alcohol control laws to protect Africa’s youth
Dr. Isabelle Uny, Senior Research Fellow at the University of Stirling, has urged African countries to enact and enforce stronger alcohol control policies to safeguard young people and protect the continent’s economic dividend.
Speaking during her presentation titled “The Growing Crisis of Alcohol Use and Harmful Substances in the African Region: Protecting Africa’s Young People and the Economic Dividend,” Dr. Uny said the rising consumption of alcohol and harmful substances among young people is contributing to non-communicable diseases, injuries and reduced productivity.
She noted that aggressive marketing, weak regulation and affordability of alcohol are key drivers of the crisis.
Dr. Uny has called for evidence-based legislation, restrictions on alcohol marketing targeting youth and increased investment in prevention programmes.
