Hon. Dr. Charles Ayume calls for stronger laws to combat antimicrobial resistance
Hon. Dr. Charles Ayume from the Parliament of Uganda, has called on African parliaments to strengthen legislation and financing towards antimicrobial management to build resilient health systems and curb the rising threat of antimicrobial resistance.
He made this call during his keynote presentation titled “The Rising Threat of Antimicrobial Resistance: Advancing Resilient Health Systems through Antimicrobial Stewardship” at the Network of African Parliamentary Committees of Health Forum held on 26th February, 2026, at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre, Kenneth Kaunda Wing.
Dr Ayume said the misuse of antibiotics in human health is accelerating drug resistance, thereby increasing treatment costs and deaths. He added that weak laboratory systems, limited surveillance and poor regulation are worsening the situation across the continent.
The Ugandan legislator therefore, called on parliamentarians to prioritise domestic funding, promote responsible antimicrobial use and enhance oversight in the health sector.
