FIRST DEPUTY SPEAKER CHISANGANO DATES THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY OF TANZANIA

The First Deputy Speaker, of the National Assembly of Zambia,Hon. Malungo Chisangano, MP,  is in Dodoma, United Republic of Tanzania, on an official benchmarking visit to the National Assembly of Tanzania.

As part of the visit, Hon. Chisangano paid a courtesy call on her counterpart, Hon. Daniel Baran Sillo, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Tanzania, on Monday, 2ndFebruary, 2026. The engagement emphasised the strong and long-standing parliamentary relations between Zambia and Tanzania.

Speaking during the meeting, Hon. Chisangano noted that beyond bilateral relations, the two Parliaments have consistently supported each other within regional and international parliamentary forums.

She highlighted continued collaboration through platforms such as the Southern African Development Community Parliamentary Forum (SADC PF), the Pan African Parliament (PAP), the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

“Through these forums, our Parliaments have jointly advanced shared positions on democracy, peace and security, good governance, gender equality, and sustainable development,”Hon. Chisangano said.

Hon. Chisanganowho emphasised the critical role of Parliaments in promoting democracy, accountability, and inclusive development, commended the Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania for its continued efforts in upholding democratic governance and fostering national development.

She said that the visit provided an opportunity to reaffirm the shared commitment between Zambia and Tanzania to strengthening parliamentary cooperation through continued dialogue, exchange of experiences, and mutual support at bilateral, regional, and global levels.

The First Deputy Speaker explained that the Zambian delegation was particularly keen to benchmark best practices in areas including legislative procedures, committee operations, capacity building for Members of Parliament and parliamentary staff, women empowerment programmes, youth participation, and the use of technology to modernize parliamentary processes.

“My visit to your Parliament is to enable us to learn how you have, over the years, promoted the welfare of women parliamentarians, as well as women and children in general,” Hon. Chisangano said.

She added that the delegation also sought to learn about initiatives aimed at easing the processing of Private Members’ Bills, mechanisms for maintaining discipline in the House and Committees, and the procedures for consideration and approval of the national budget.

And Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Tanzania, Daniel Sillo welcomed the Zambian delegation and commended the National Assembly of Zambia for establishing the Institute of Parliamentary Studies and Training, noting that the initiative will benefit Parliaments across the SADC region through enhanced capacity building and knowledge sharing.

Deputy Speaker, Chisangano’s visit to Tanzania reflectsthe growing commitment by African legislatures to strengthen parliamentary institutions through cooperation,shared learning and collective advancement of democratic governance.
