The National Assembly of Zambia has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Cavendish University Zambia aimed at strengthening academic collaboration and professional development for Members of Parliament, staff and their immediate families.
Speaking during a Signing Ceremony held on Wednesday, 29th October, 2025 at Parliament Buildings, the Acting Clerk of the National Assembly, Mrs. Loveness M. Mayaka, said the MoU has come at a time when the National Assembly is establishing the Institute of Parliamentary Studies and Training (IPST).
She said the Institute will play a key role in facilitating continuous education, innovation and capacity development for the Members and staff so that Parliament can effectively respond to the needs of the people.
“This is in line with the National Assembly’s Strategic Plan for 2022–2026, Strategic Objective number 1.1 and 1.2 which focuses on enhancing the capacity of Members of Parliament and staff in the discharge of their Parliamentary function,” Mrs. Mayaka said.
Mrs. Mayaka further said the partnership with the University is not merely administrative but strategic in that it acknowledges the evolving nature of Parliament as a representative institution that values evidence-based decision-making, continuous learning and professional excellence.
Meanwhile, Cavendish University Zambia’s Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Professor Chungu, expressed gratitude to the National Assembly for the collaboration. He said that education remains key to national development, adding that Cavendish University’s programmes are designed to accommodate the busy schedules of Members and staff while promoting critical thinking, especially in light of the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Professor Chungu further explained that the University’s programmes aim to equip Members with relevant competencies and sharpen their skills in response to emerging needs. He added that the partnership with the National Assembly therefore provides an important opportunity for the University to contribute to the curriculum development of the Institute of Parliamentary Studies and Training (IPST).
