Acting Clerk of the National Assembly, Mrs. Loveness Mayaka, says the National Assembly of Zambia is delighted that BBC Media Action has extended its partnership under the Citizens’ Voice Project to January 2026, a move that reflects the organisation’s continued commitment to strengthening parliamentary engagement and citizen participation in governance.
Speaking when BBC Media Action Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Simon Bishop and his delegation paid a courtesy call on her, on Wednesday, 8th October, 2025, at Parliament Buildings, Mrs. Mayaka stated that the extension demonstrates BBC Media Action’s continued commitment to strengthening parliamentary engagement with citizens and civil society.
She said through the Citizens’ Voice Project, the National Assembly has improved its communication and outreach strategies, helping to connect leaders and citizens. Mrs. Mayaka noted that the partnership has also provided equipment support to the Parliamentary Broadcasting Services, enabling the procurement of studio microphones, editing computers, headsets, field recorders and mobile phones for community journalists.
“These investments have greatly improved the quality of our productions and strengthened Parliament’s capacity to communicate effectively with the public,” she said.
Mrs. Mayaka further said that radio and television programmes supported by BBC Media Action have played a significant role in promoting public understanding of parliamentary work by facilitating direct interaction between Members of Parliament and citizens on national issues.
“These programmes have demystified the work of Parliament and created platforms for citizens, including women, youth and persons who are physically challenged, to share their views and contribute to policy discussions,” she explained.
The Acting Clerk added that capacity-building activities, including mentorship and technical training for staff in the Parliamentary Broadcasting Services and the Public and International Relations Department, have enhanced Parliament’s ability to communicate effectively with the public through improved content production, media relations and storytelling.
Mrs. Mayaka stated that the National Assembly remains committed to sustaining the gains achieved through the partnership and integrating media engagement into its long-term Strategic Communication Framework.
Meanwhile, BBC Media Action Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Simon Bishop, said the organisation values its partnership with the National Assembly of Zambia, which has become a model for promoting citizen participation in governance through innovative media approaches.
He stated that BBC Media Action will continue working closely with the National Assembly, to provide trusted information through the use of digital platforms and community media, to ensure that voices from all parts of the country are heard.
