Zambia and United Arab Emirates: A Growing Economic Alliance

On Wednesday the 1st of October, 2025 at Parliament Buildings the United Arab Emirates Ambassador to Zimbabwe, His Excellency Dr Jassim Mohamed AlQasemi paid a courtesy call on the Speaker of the National Assembly, the Rt Honourable Ms Nelly B. K. Mutti, SC, FAPRA to engage on dialogue to foster enhanced bilateral relations between the two countries.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Zambia share a growing economic partnership with significant recent increases in bilateral trade, driven by UAE investments in sectors beyond mining, such as energy, agriculture, and tourism.

Citing the recent investments in Zambia by the UAE, Speaker Mutti said that after Zambia experienced a drought which ultimately affected electricity generation, the growing ties between the two countries particularly in the energy sector have proved to be fruitful as a 2 billion Dollar deal was struck to develop renewable energy sources within Zambia to alleviate the energy deficit.

She added that through the Khalifa Fund for Enterprise Development, a non-profit economic development fund of the UAE Government, Small and Medium Enterprises in Zambia have benefitted from the financial support provided. Women and youth who were disadvantaged have since been empowered through the investment fund allowing them to establish themselves and earn a living through business.

The Ambassador expressed that there is still an appetite among investors from the UAE to explore different sectors in Zambia for enhanced economic development. He further said that as a result of the increased interactions between the two states, the UAE government had plans of soon opening an embassy in the country to foster greater relations and services.
