The Non-Governmental Gender Organisations’ Coordinating Council (NGOCC), celebrated its 40th anniversary with an Awards Gala Dinner  on 19th September, 2025 at Golden Peacock Hotel in Lusaka, where outstanding women championing gender equality were recognised.

Among those honoured was the Speaker of the National Assembly of Zambia, Rt. Hon. Nelly B.K. Mutti, SC, MP, FAPRA, who was represented at the ceremony by the First Deputy Speaker, Hon. Malungo A. Chisangano, MP.

Speaker Mutti was acknowledged as the first woman appointed by President Hakainde Hichilema to serve as Speaker of the National Assembly. She was also recognised for fostering collaboration between the National Assembly and the NGOCC in promoting gender equality, advancing women’s empowerment and strengthening inclusive governance.

The Vice President of the Republic of Zambia, Hon. W.K. Mutale Nalumango, MP, who graced the event, was also honoured for her exemplary role as a trailblazer for women in governance. Other women recognised included Princess Kasune, the first woman appointed as Minister of Justice, Hon. Inonge Mutukwa Wina, the first female Vice President of Zambia and the late Justice Irene Mambilima, Zambia’s first female Chief Justice.

Lundazi Member of Parliament, Hon. Brenda Nyirenda, received an award under the category of Exemplary Female Activist for her advocacy on gender equality and her efforts in amplifying the voices of women and girls.

The event brought together leaders and gender equality advocates to celebrate four decades of NGOCC’s contribution to advancing women’s rights and inclusive development in Zambia.
