NATIONAL ASSEMBLY CELEBRATES DEDICATION AND SERVICE AT THE 2025 LABOUR AWARDS CEREMONY

The National Assembly of Zambia held a combined ceremony at Parliament Buildings to honor outstanding members of staff for their dedication, hard work and professionalism, as part of the 2025 Labour Day and the inaugural Parliament Day commemorations. The event, which took place on Monday, 21st July 2025, was celebrated under the national theme, “Shaping Zambia’s Future of Work Through HomeGrown Solutions for Inclusive Economic Growth,” highlighting the institution’s commitment to recognising excellence and promoting inclusive workplace development.

Speaking during the event, Acting Clerk of the National Assembly, Mrs. Loveness M. Mayaka, emphasized the significance of Labour Day as a reminder of the dignity of work and the value of every employee’s contribution to National Development. She applauded the commitment of staff at the National Assembly, noting that their efforts both seen and unseen play a critical role in upholding the integrity and efficiency of Parliament as a cornerstone of Zambia’s democracy.

“To the recipients of the awards today, congratulations. You are being recognised not just for doing your job, but for going above and beyond the call of duty,” said Acting Clerk Mrs. Loveness M. Mayaka. She announced that fifteen officers had been selected for recognition, each receiving a certificate and a token of K5,000. The awardees were drawn from three categories: five under Most Hardworking Employees, six under Most Dedicated Employees, and four under Most Honest and Trustworthy Employees.

Mrs Mayaka also acknowledged departments and constituencies that excelled during the inaugural Parliament Day exhibitions held in May. The Motel Department was awarded for having the best exhibition, followed by the Parliamentary Broadcasting Department. Among the constituencies, Mansa Central and Solwezi were recognised for their outstanding participation. She encouraged all staff to continue striving for excellence and reassured those who were not awarded that their contributions remain deeply appreciated and their time for recognition will come.

In his welcoming remarks, Deputy Clerk Administration, Mr. Sage C. Samuwika, explained that this year’s Labour Day celebration was strategically held in July to incorporate the commemorations of Parliament Day, which was officially declared by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Nelly B.K. Mutti, SC, MP, FAPRA, to be observed annually on 23rd May. The first ever Parliament Day, held on 23rd May 2025, marked 100 years since the establishment of the National Assembly and provided an opportunity for staff to showcase innovation and creativity under tight timelines and limited resources.

Mr. Samuwika praised the efforts of the staff during the Parliament Day exhibitions and announced that, for the first time, recognition would also be extended to departments and provincial constituency offices. He also shared that the Administration Department had begun reviewing institutional policies, including the Awards Policy to broaden the selection criteria and potentially link such awards to future promotions aimed at boosting morale and encouraging higher performance.

The combined celebration underscored the National Assembly’s commitment to recognising staff contributions and promoting a workplace culture of accountability, excellence and service. The event closed with appreciation for all employees who continue to support the institution’s vision of an inclusive and effective Parliament, responsive to the needs of the Zambian people.
