EUROPEAN UNION PLEDGES CONTINUED SUPPORT TO ZAMBIA

European Union Ambassador to Zambia, Karolina Stasiak has disclosed that the European Union has secured 153 million EUR development support for Zambia for the period 2025 to 2027.

Ambassador Karolina Stasiak, who made the announcement when she paid a courtesy call on the Right Honorable Ms. Nelly B. K. Mutti, SC, MP, FAPRA, Speaker of the National Assembly, on 20th march, 2025 at Parliament also assured the Speaker of the European Union’s continued support to the legislative wing of the government.

Ambassador Stasiak said that despite there being a leadership change at the European Union in Brussels, the priorities remained focused on attracting investment and sustainable development.

She said that the funding envelope of 153 million EUR which has been secured for the 2025-2027 period will be directed towards; recapitalizing Zambia Railways, Lobito Corridor, enhancing energy provision including equipping water utilities with solar energy and democratic governance. 

The Ambassador said that the partnership between the EU and Zambia was based on common values of democracy, human rights and freedoms adding that Zambia’s governance and democracy was critical as there is a correlation between democratic governance and economic development.

She further noted that geopolitical challenges, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict, had not hindered the EU’s commitment to Zambia.

And speaking earlier, Speaker Mutti praised the EU’s support for Zambia’s socio-economic development, democracy, and human rights, highlighting the 2.7 million EUR COVID-19 aid package. She acknowledged the EU’s role in strengthening Zambia’s parliamentary capacity and called for continued collaboration to achieve shared goals of prosperity, peace, and sustainable development.

 

Speaker Mutti also assured the Ambassador that the amendment to the Constitution is a people driven process and requires a two thirds majority in the National Assembly. She further assured the ambassador that the National Assembly is a critical institution in promotion of democratic governance.

Speaker Mutti also emphasized the need for increased female representation in Parliament, noting a decline from 18% to 15%. She stressed the importance of inclusive governance and announced plans for a Parliamentary crèche to support female MPs, staff, and stakeholders with young children. The foundation stone for the facility is set to be unveiled on March 27, 2025, with the EU invited to participate in this milestone event.
