Kafue Member of Parliament, Ms M Chonya, MP, has called on Speakers from National and Regional Parliaments to strengthen and push for practical measures towards addressing gender disparities in Africa. Ms Chonya, MP, is representing the Rt Honourable Speaker, Ms Nelly B K Mutti, SC, MP, FAPRA, at the Conference of Speakers of African Parliaments which is taking place in Midrand, South Africa, alongside the Committee Session of the Pan African Parliament.
Ms Chonya, MP, made the remarks during the debate of the status of implementation of Agenda 2063. The African Union has prioritised gender equality in its long term vision for the Continent known as Agenda 2063. Under this vision, it is envisaged that there would be gender equality in all spheres of life with equal participation and representation of women in all aspects. The continental vision under Agenda 2063 aims to promote attainment of full gender parity with women occupying 50% of elected offices at state, regional and local bodies, and 50% of managerial positions in government and the private sector.
However, the evaluation results of the first ten years of implementation revealed that 26 out of 69 Agenda 2063 indicators being tracked by the African Union were rated between zero and fifty percentage success rate, with gender related indicators highly affected.
‘There is need to strengthen measures towards addressing this gender disparity by implementing practical measures. The entails putting in place practical measures to address the gender gap. We are not doing enough as a continent. And if we go on this trajectory, we may not reach the goals we have set for ourselves in Agenda 2063’ said Ms Chonya, MP.
She also emphasised that many women remained at the end of the economic pendulum and thus there was need to put in place deliberate efforts to empower women and stimulate their participation in politics and governance.
MS Chonya, MP, also announced that she had been appointed as Zambia’s Women Political Leader’s Country Ambassador by the Speaker of the National Assembly of Zambia, a platform that she will use to continue to push for the realisation of Agenda 2063 goals on attaining full gender parity.
Ms Chonya, MP, is accompanied by the Deputy Clerk for Administration, Mrs Loveness Mayaka.
