ROLE OF PARLIAMENT FUNDAMENTAL TO A RESPONSIVE DEMOCRACY

His Excellency Mr. Michael Gonzales, Ambassador of the United States of America accredited to Zambia says the role that Parliaments play around the world is fundamental to the success of an accountable and responsive democracy.

He said this when he paid a courtesy call on the Speaker of the National Assembly the Rt Honourable Ms. Nelly B K Mutti, MP on Thursday 6th October, 2022 at Parliament Buildings.

His Excellency stated that the Government’s Ultimateroleis to deliveron the promises that were made during the campaignsto the people that put them into office and that it’s highly criticalfor Parliament to ensure that there’s accountability and oversight as the promises are being fulfilled.

Speaker of the Nation Assembly the Rt Honourable Ms Nelly B K Mutti, MP welcomed His Excellency to Zambia and spoke about the importance of deepening the continued bilateral relations between the two countries.

The Honourable Speaker indicated to Mr Gonzales that Parliament has continued to implement reformsaimed at enhancing the tenets of good governance with support from cooperating partners such as the United States of America.

“With the United States of America being Zambia’s largest bilateral donor in the education, agriculture, and health sector, it is our hope thatwe will benefit from your expertise as we continue to implement some of our desired reforms”, she said.

The courtesy call was aimed at reaffirming the existing relations between Zambia and the United States. The two countries continue to enjoy good bilateral relations and cooperation.
