The President of the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU), Dr Theo-Ben Gurirab, issued an urgent call to the leaders of United Nations Member States due to meet at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference on Parties in Copenhagen in December to rise to the historic challenge of concluding an agreement on combating climate change.

Geneva, 12 September 2008 - No. 309 At the Parliamentary Conference on the World Trade Organization (WTO) convened by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the European Parliament, the more than 400 parliamentarians from over 80 countries adopted today in Geneva a declaration, following a hearing with WTO Director-General, Mr. Pascal Lamy, and a dialogue with government negotiators, WTO officials and civil society representatives. |

IPU applauds Rwanda as first parliament to elect a majority of women members |

Geneva, 18 September 2008 – No. 311 According to the initial results of this week’s legislative elections in Rwanda, women won more than 50 per cent of seats in parliament. “The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) welcomes this historical result. For the first time an elected national parliament has a majority of women”, said the IPU Secretary General, Mr. Anders B. Johnsson. Official results will be available next week. |

Geneva, 5 April 2007- No. 268, The President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Mr. Pier Ferdinando Casini, yesterday evening completed an official trip to Chad during which he visited the Goz Beida camp for Sudanese refugees and the Djabal camp for displaced persons from Chad on the north-eastern Chad-Sudan border. |
